Crystals Articles / Where do Crystals grow?
Almost every country on Earth has a selection of Crystals and minerals under the ground, though some have a great deal more than others. Whenever you get large mines and raw minerals/metals : you get crystals. Crystals are formed out of chemical elements, deep in the ground, and usually over milions of years. Copper mines will always produce copped-based mineral: such as Malachite and Azurite and Chrysocolla, whereas Iron mines will always produce Iron-based minerals : such as Hematite.
The purest and biggest crystals grow from purer stocks of elements. So a very large reserve of Copper will produce wonderful and large copper-based crystals, but small deposits of copper may only have tiny, impure and imperfect copper-based minerals around it.
Some Famous Mineral Localities :
Tsumeb is a small town with the World's largest copper production history. The huge mines are now closed, awaiting possible reopening, but the crystals and minerals that have been found and extracted here in the past 100 years utterly wow, dazzle, impress and surpass all other localities.
This is also a vast area with thousands of metal and minerals mines, and incredible mineral diversity. Known for incredible Calcites, and a very obviously Fluorite habit which is often purple, soft corner, and in combination with silver Mica. Lots of rare minerals based on weird metals too: Arsenopyrite, Bismuth, Galena, Boulangerite..
BRANDBERG MOUNTAINS: Namibia
The exotic raised-up Brandberg Mountains produce the Wolrd's finest Amethyst and Quartz crystals, for exotic form, quality, prismatics and detail.
MINAS GERAIS: Brazil
Huge enormous area - literally named The General Mines (Minas Gerais), and producing most of the World's Amehyst geodes, and vast qualities of Quartz and Diamonds, Topaz, Aquamarine, Touramline, Calcite and more...
Impossible to choose a sinlge locality within these two mineral-rich countries. So many of my favourites Tourmalines have orginated from here. Here's a few of the top locales: Pech, Laghman, Paprok..
